Why You Must Check Lash Direction Before Sizing Your Shield
Share
One of the most common shield selection mistakes in Korean lash lifts happens when lashes are already growing downward. Sizing up sounds like the right call to get a stronger lift — but on downward-growing lashes, it almost always leads to an undercurl. The card text in this reel states it directly: do not size up for downward-growing lashes.
Why Downward-Growing Lashes Behave Differently
Lash direction is one of the most important factors in shield selection, and it is also one of the easiest to overlook. When a client has lashes that grow downward, the lash has to travel a much greater distance to reach a lifted position. If you size up on a downward-growing lash, the shield forces the lash to bend too aggressively at the base before it can start lifting. The result is an undercurl — the lash curls under rather than lifting upward cleanly.
Proper softening is essential for this lash type. Without enough softening, the lash does not have the flexibility to bend correctly onto the shield, regardless of which shield you choose.
The Assessment Step You Must Not Skip
Before selecting a shield, you need to clearly confirm which direction your client's lashes are growing. The correct way to assess this is to take photos from the front AND from the side while the client is sitting upright — not lying down.
When a client lies flat on the treatment bed, gravity pulls the lashes differently and the downward direction becomes less obvious. When the client sits upright, you can clearly see how the lashes fall naturally from the lash line. This is your baseline assessment. It is basic, but in the flow of a busy appointment it is easy to forget. Take the photo — it takes ten seconds and gives you critical information that protects your result.
Shield Selection for Downward-Growing Lashes
Once you have confirmed the lash direction, here is how to choose the right shield:
Option 1: Easy No-Glue Shields — For a Rounded Root
For clients with downward-growing lashes who want a soft, rounded root lift, the Easy No-Glue Shield is the correct choice. The key fitting rule: lashes should fill about 80 to 90 percent of the shield. Do not size up. The shield should feel snug for this lash type, not oversized. This prevents the undercurl and allows the lash to lift cleanly onto the shield surface.

Option 2: Edge Shields — For an Angular Root
If the client prefers a sharper, more angular root lift with a very defined, bold curl right at the lash line, the Edge Shield is a strong option for downward-growing lashes. The L curl shape of the Edge Shield creates immediate upward direction at the root, which can be very effective for lashes that need extra help clearing the lid. Discuss the look preference with your client before choosing — this option suits clients who want a more dramatic root angle.

The Rule to Remember
Lash direction assessment is not optional — it is the foundation of a correct Korean lash lift result. Photograph from the front and side while the client is seated upright, confirm the direction, and select your shield based on what you see. For downward-growing lashes specifically: stay at the correct fit, soften thoroughly, and let the technique do the work. Do not size up.
