Why You Should Always Assess Lash Lift Clients While Seated
Share
There's one simple habit that separates consistent lash lift results from unpredictable ones — and it has nothing to do with your technique or the products you use. It's about when and how you assess your client. Evaluating your client while they're lying down gives you an inaccurate picture. Here's why taking seated photos before and after every lash lift can completely change your results.
Why Lying Down Distorts What You See
When a client is lying flat on the treatment bed, gravity pulls the skin and soft tissue differently than when they're upright. The eyelids shift, the brow bone position changes, and the lashes appear to curl more than they actually do in real life. This is exactly why so many clients leave a lash lift looking amazing on the bed — then come back a day later saying the curl isn't visible, or that the lashes are pressing against the eyelid.
The lying-down position gives you a false reading of how the lash lift will actually look when the client goes about their day.
The Seated Assessment: Before the Treatment
Before beginning a lash lift, always have your client sit or stand upright and take front and side photos. This gives you the real baseline to work from. When you're seated, you can accurately assess:
- The natural direction and curl of the lashes
- The height and shape of the brow bone
- How much eyelid is visible and how much is covered
- The appropriate rod size to achieve the desired result
Clients with a prominent brow bone or heavy hooded eyelid will look completely different sitting versus lying. Choosing your rod size based on the upright position prevents both under-curl and over-curl.
The Seated Assessment: After the Treatment
Once the treatment is complete, ask your client to sit up before they leave. Take matching front and side photos in the same position as your before shots. This is your true "after" — not what you saw on the bed. It's also your best opportunity to evaluate whether the lift actually achieved the desired look, and whether any adjustments might be needed in future visits.
This before-and-after photo practice is also excellent for your portfolio and for communicating results to clients.
Make It a Non-Negotiable Part of Every Service
This is a small habit that makes a huge difference. Whether you're training new lash artists or refining your own workflow, seated client assessment should be built into every appointment. It eliminates guesswork, improves your rod selection accuracy, and gives clients a realistic understanding of their results — which means fewer complaints and more rebookings.
